Nestled in the heart of an ancient volcanic crater, Pilanesberg Nature Reserve is one of South Africa’s most extraordinary safari destinations. With its Big Five game, rich birdlife, and unique volcanic landscapes, it offers a malaria-free wilderness escape just two hours from Johannesburg. To learn more about what makes this reserve so special, we spoke to a representative from Mankwe Gametrackers, the North West Province’s leading outdoor adventure provider.
Can you tell us a bit about “Game Tracker service” & your role within the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve?
Mankwe Gametrackers is the largest outdoor adventure activity provider in the North West Province, operating primarily within the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve. We specialize in open-vehicle safari game drives, bush walks, hot air balloon safaris, quad biking, archery, and more. Our mission is to provide immersive, informative, and unforgettable wildlife experiences for guests of all ages. Our role includes overseeing guest engagement, guiding safaris, and ensuring that every adventure is educational, safe, and leaves a lasting impression of South Africa’s rich biodiversity.

What makes the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve such a unique and special safari destination in South Africa?
The Pilanesberg is geologically extraordinary – it sits within the crater of an extinct volcano, one of only a few alkaline ring complexes in the world. This unique landscape supports a wide variety of habitats, from grasslands to rocky outcrops, resulting in rich biodiversity. It’s home to the Big Five and over 360 bird species. Additionally, it’s a malaria-free area and easily accessible from Johannesburg and Pretoria, making it ideal for local and international tourists alike. The reserve also blends conservation with community empowerment, which adds a meaningful dimension to the visitor experience.

How do your game drives cater to different types of guests, from first-time safari-goers to seasoned wildlife enthusiasts?
Our drives are highly adaptable. For first-timers, guides offer detailed introductions to animal behavior, tracking, and the ecological importance of species. For seasoned enthusiasts, we offer specialized experiences focusing on rare sightings, photography, and in-depth ecological insights. Our open safari vehicles allow for unobstructed views, and our guides are trained to tailor their commentary and route selection to suit guests’ interests, whether they’re seeking iconic Big Five sightings or a deeper dive into birdwatching or flora.

Can you describe what a typical sunrise or sunset game drive experience is like for visitors?
Sunrise and sunset drives are magical. At dawn, guests are greeted with a peaceful, dewy landscape, the sky painted in pastel tones. Animals are most active in the early morning, and guests often witness elephants at watering holes or lions returning from a night hunt. Sunset drives offer a different ambiance – golden light, the distant call of jackals, and nocturnal wildlife beginning to stir. Both include refreshment stops: coffee and rusks in the morning, or sundowners and snacks in the evening, allowing guests to relax and take in the scenery.

Are there any recent exciting wildlife stories or memorable encounters that stand out to you from the past few months?
Lions are generally more active in cooler weather. In hot climates, they tend to rest during the day and hunt at night, but winter’s lower temperatures allow them to be active for longer during daylight hours. On the 1st of May, we had a particularly memorable encounter – a lioness calmly walked along the road between several safari and private vehicles. It was a striking moment that signaled the shift into the winter season and reminded us just how special these close-up sightings can be.

What would the ultimate first-time experience or must-do’s be for new visitors?
A Hot Air Balloon safari is a must – there’s no better way to start your Pilanesberg experience. Paired with a safari, followed by a bush breakfast, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime morning. For a unique thrill, add a quad biking adventure through the nearby Letsatsing Game Reserve. And if you have time, an evening bush dinner under the stars makes for an unforgettable finale to a day of adventure.

What are some tips you would give guests to get the most out of their safari experience in the Pilanesberg?
Dress in neutral colors and layers – mornings can be cold, but it warms up quickly. Bring binoculars, a good camera, and keep your eyes open, even when animals aren’t immediately visible. Ask questions – our guides are passionate and full of knowledge. Also, silence is golden: the quieter you are, the more wildlife you’ll notice. Lastly, come with an open mind – not every sighting is dramatic, but the subtleties of nature are just as beautiful and meaningful.

Do you offer any special or exclusive experiences, such as private drives, photography tours, or bush dining?
Yes, we offer several bespoke experiences. Private game drives allow for a personalized pace and route, and our exclusive safaris allow for more hours in the bush. For romantic getaways or special celebrations, we offer bush dinners, and even sunrise hot air balloon flights followed by full English breakfasts. These add an exclusive, luxurious touch to the wilderness experience.

What do you hope every guest takes away from their time in the Pilanesberg?
We hope each guest leaves with a deeper appreciation for wildlife and conservation. It’s not just about seeing the Big Five, but about understanding the complex web of life that sustains this ecosystem. We aim to create awe, curiosity, and a sense of connection with nature. Ideally, guests leave feeling inspired- carrying a piece of the Pilanesberg’s beauty and the importance of protecting it wherever they go.

Whether you’re chasing lions at sunrise, floating silently above the bush in a hot air balloon, or simply soaking in the stillness of the veld, Pilanesberg—with the expert guidance of Mankwe Gametrackers—offers a safari experience that’s both wild and deeply personal.
