- Tenerife is known for some immaculate golf courses, what makes Tenerife a unique destination for golf enthusiasts?
Tenerife has 10 golf courses in total, including the golf course the neighbour island of La Gomera , and two 9 hole courses. Any visitor can enjoy a different golf course everyday, which makes Tenerife a very solid golf destination. But what makes Tenerife a unique destination are not just the golf courses. Tenerife has many other activities to offer, like visiting amazing nature parks, cultural activities, wineries, amazing gastronomy and anything you want to do on the sea.
- What is the impact that an international golf event like the International Pairs World Final can have on Tenerife in terms of tourism, promotion of the island and economic development?
Celebrating international golf events is part of the Tenerife Golf promotion strategy. We believe that hosting tournaments like the Pairs World Final have a tremendous media impact, direct economic input, and all the people that will play the tournament will go back home speaking to their friends about the wonderful time they enjoyed in Tenerife. That is the ideal promotion event for golf in Tenerife.
- As Tenerife Golf looks toward the future, are there any exciting developments or projects on the horizon aimed at enhancing the island’s golf infrastructure and visitor experience?
At the moment there is one additional 18 hole golf course that is fully planned, but still has to get the pertinent approval from the authorities to start building. Apart from that, there are plans for 9 more holes in Abama Golf, but that is a longer term project. These additions will make the destinations even more attractive for golfers of course.
- Can you give some insights on Golf del Sur, the golf course that will host the International Pairs World Final and Ryder Experience in Tenerife?
Golf del Sur is the first commercial golf course on the island and designed by Pepe Gancedo, a famous Spanish golf course designer. The golf course offers all the facilities and services required to have a wonderful time with beautiful views over the ocean and Montaña Roja. One of the main visual characteristics of the golf course are the black volcanic sand waste areas that make a beautiful contrast with the green fairways. The course has recently refurbished all the bunkers to improve the quality of playing conditions.
- Being a former golf professional, what would your advice be to participants taking on Golf Del Sur?
The key to be successful playing Golf del Sur is placing the ball in the right side of the fairway to be able to approach the greens with a good perspective. It’s not a very long course, but some greens have great movement, so being on the right side of the green is very important. The wind can play a key role many days of the year, so dominating the ball flight is imperative. It’s a fantastic challenge for any golfer.
- Lastly, what are the top attractions you would recommend participants and guests visit during their stay on the island?
Tenerife has a great variety of attractions and things to do outside the golf courses. I would highly recommend a visit to The Teide Volcano, a National Park that has the tallest peak in Spain that shows an incredible volcanic landscape that will leave you breathless. I would also recommend to go whale watching. Tenerife is one of the only 3 whales sanctuaries in the world and is a must activity on the island. Apart from that, you can enjoy a wine tasting activity in any of the amazing wineries of the island, eat some delicious fresh fish with “wrinkled potatoes” on any “guachinche” on the island, go shopping, or visit the world heritage city of La Laguna to enjoy the local atmosphere. Tenerife has something to offer to everyone.
