Avis Canarias shares practical advice for a smoother arrival, the right car for golf equipment and the island drives worth making time for during the 2026 International Pairs World Final.
In written responses prepared for International Pairs, the Avis Canarias team combined local knowledge with clear guidance for golfers travelling through Tenerife South Airport. The result is a useful guide to planning the road beyond the golf course, from what to have ready at collection to where to drive between rounds.

Do the Work Before You Land
At Tenerife South Airport, customers follow the instructions in their reservation to the designated Avis shuttle meeting point. A courtesy shuttle then connects the terminal with the nearby Avis facilities.
The team’s central advice is to complete as much rental information as possible before travelling and to include the correct flight number in the booking. That helps Avis monitor the arrival if a flight is delayed and reduces avoidable paperwork after a long journey with luggage and golf equipment.
Have these ready at collection
- A valid driving licence and passport or photo identification
- Your reservation confirmation and the correct flight number
- A physical credit card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit
- Documentation for every person who will be added as an authorised driver
- An International Driving Permit where the licence origin or alphabet requires one

Book for the Bags, Not Just the Seats
What should a pair or group of four choose when clubs, trolleys and luggage all need to fit?
Avis Canarias recommends being more generous with vehicle size than usual. Two golfers with two golf bags and normal luggage should consider an estate car or a medium-to-large SUV. Four golfers travelling with four bags, trolleys and luggage should prioritise boot capacity and consider a large SUV, people carrier or a similar higher-capacity category.
A five-seat car does not automatically have enough storage for four golfers and their equipment. The practical advice is to mention the golf bags when booking and allow extra space rather than relying on passenger capacity alone.
Automatic or manual, compact or large?
Tenerife has excellent motorways, but also steep climbs, mountain roads, tight bends and smaller streets. A compact car can make parking and town visits easier for a couple travelling light, while golfers need to balance manoeuvrability with luggage space. Drivers who are not comfortable using a manual gearbox on steep roads should reserve an automatic in advance.

Know What the Rental Includes
What commonly catches international visitors out at the desk?
The main driver should present a valid licence, passport or photo identification, reservation confirmation and the appropriate payment card in their own name. Avis Canarias states that a physical credit card is required for the security deposit; a card shown only through a phone or digital wallet is not sufficient.
Drivers in Spain generally need to be at least 21 and to have held a valid licence for at least one year. Some vehicle categories carry higher age requirements, and drivers under 25 may face a young-driver surcharge. Visitors with a licence issued outside Europe, or one that uses a non-Latin alphabet, should check in advance whether an International Driving Permit is required.
What should travellers understand about protection?
Basic protection and more comprehensive rental protection are not necessarily the same. Depending on the product booked, the customer may still carry an excess if the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen. Avis Canarias advises international visitors to consider comprehensive protection offered directly by the rental company and to understand the cover, exclusions and excess before driving away.
Third-party travel or broker insurance may be useful, but it is a separate contract and does not necessarily replace the rental company’s deposit or conditions.

Make the Drive Part of the Destination
Which road should every visitor experience?
Avis Canarias recommends setting out early for Teide National Park. From the coast, the road climbs through pine forest and cloud before opening into a volcanic landscape more than 2,000 metres above sea level. Early morning generally means quieter roads and viewpoints, softer light and enough time to continue north or return to the coast.
Where should golfers go on a free afternoon?
For guests staying near Golf del Sur or Amarilla Golf, the team suggests Vilaflor de Chasna. One of Tenerife’s highest villages, it offers a quieter, more rural contrast to the coast, with Canarian pine forest, traditional architecture and wide views along the approach.
Is a hybrid or fully electric vehicle practical?
A hybrid can reduce fuel use without changing the journey-planning experience significantly. A fully electric vehicle can also be practical on Tenerife, provided charging stops are planned. Avis Canarias notes that it does not currently offer fully electric vehicles in its rental fleet, so customers should not expect an electric option in the available range.
