Known for its timeless grandeur, The Palace at Sun City continues to be a symbol of luxury, elegance, and revitalisation in the heart of South Africa’s most iconic resort. As the hospitality landscape evolves, The Palace of The Lost City has remained at the forefront of opulent accommodation, wellness offerings, and world-class service.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Mr. Nico Myburgh, General Manager of The Palace at Sun City, to explore the essence of luxury, relaxation, and rejuvenation that defines the Royal Spa and the wellness philosophy of this iconic resort. From transformative spa treatments to hidden gems tucked within the property, Mr. Myburgh shares his insight on how Sun City continues to enchant and elevate every guest’s journey.

Sun City is known for its world-class spa and wellness offerings. What makes it such a unique and special experience for guests visiting Sun City?
Royal Spa at The Palace is designed as a serene sanctuary, enveloped by botanical gardens and soothing water features, which enhances the overall sensory experience. Our treatments blend traditional healing practices with contemporary techniques, ensuring that every guest feels like royalty. This commitment to exceptional service, combined with our bespoke offerings, creates an unparalleled environment where guests can truly unwind and rejuvenate.

Wellness and relaxation are a big part of the luxury experience at Sun City. What are some must-try spa treatments or wellness experiences for those looking to unwind?
For those seeking relaxation, I highly recommend the signature spa treatments, such as the “Royal Spa Signature Massage”, which combines various techniques to alleviate tension and promote deep relaxation. Additionally, a Lagoon Relaxing Hydrobath instantly immerses the body into a state of calm. Guests should also not miss a session in the Himalayan Crystal Salt Sauna, Rasul and the unique experience of our botanical garden relaxation area, which provide a peaceful setting to unwind before or after treatments.

If a visitor wanted to experience the ultimate spa and pamper day at The Palace, what would the perfect itinerary look like?
The perfect spa day starts with a delectable breakfast at the magnificent Crystal Court, followed by a refreshing herbal tea. Guests can indulge in an energising “Hot Stone Therapy Massage”, followed by a rejuvenating facial to leave them glowing. After their treatments, they’d enjoy a healthy spa lunch in our Spa Café area.
In the afternoon, we recommend a soothing experience in our Rasul, followed by some quiet time in our relaxation lounge. To conclude the day, guests can treat themselves to a Royal Spa Manicure or Pedicure, along with a luxurious hair service, ensuring they leave feeling pampered and revitalized.

The Royal Spa specializes in luxury treatments, but also in recovery and rejuvenation. What services would you recommend for someone looking to relieve stress or recover from travel fatigue?
For travelers seeking relief from stress and fatigue, I recommend starting with an Aromatherapy Massage to melt away tension, followed by a therapeutic soak in a Marine Algae Detox Hydrobath to ease muscle soreness. Spend some time in the Himalayan Crystal Salt Sauna to help improve respiratory function and promote relaxation. A LED Light Therapy Mask treatment offers an extra boost to enhance skin recovery and reduce signs of fatigue. Finally, take advantage of our indoor and outdoor relaxation areas to fully recharge and enjoy a peaceful escape. Together, these treatments provide a holistic approach to recovery, leaving you refreshed and stress-free.

Beyond the spa, what other wellness-focused activities are available at Sun City for guests looking to rejuvenate, such as yoga, nature walks, or meditation?
We have just launched a 5km parkrun which takes place on Saturday mornings at 7am. The walk takes place on the Gary Player golf course and everyone is invited to run, walk or jog. We have padel, tennis courts if you’d like to break a sweat with friends.

The Palace is known for its tranquil and luxurious setting. Could you share more about what makes The Palace and Sun City special, including any hidden gems that guests might not know about?
Besides the blend of opulence and natural beauty, making The Palace one of Africa’s most iconic destinations, there is the royal architecture, inspired by ancient African legends, which creates a majestic atmosphere that’s both immersive and awe-inspiring. We also have a Secret Garden with walking trails between The Palace and the Royal Baths.
Here are some fun facts of The Palace:
- All of the timber doors to the bedrooms were hand-carved, including the massive 8m-high doors at the royal entrance.
- Nearly every item in The Palace was custom-made and 85% of all materials were sourced within southern Africa. This was the first time that hand-carved furniture was used throughout the public areas and guestrooms of a hotel.
- Among the decor items are six elephant tusks, arched in pairs over the Tusk Lounge and Bar. They are 5.6m high and weigh two tons each. They were carved in Indonesia out of local Squara wood (which is heavier than ivory). Because of their weight, they were made in four sections and assembled on site.
- The atrium is dominated by a life-size bronze sculpture of Shawu, a large bull elephant who lived at the Kruger National Park. At a shoulder height of 3.4 meters, Shawu’s left tusk was the longest on record in the region, and one of the sixth longest ever recorded in Africa. The famous elephant was brought to life by South African sculptor Danie de Jager, whose sculpture of Shawu realistically portrays the leathery texture of his skin, his ragged ears and cracked feet. Shawu towers 4.5m above the ground and is one of the most photographed animal sculptures in the world.
- Each of the fabrics and carpets were designed and created exclusively for The Palace. The tapestries in the Royal Entrance Chamber, behind the concierge and the reception desk, took two years to weave.

If you had to create the ultimate itinerary for a non-golfer spending a perfect day at Sun City, what would it include?
- Start the day with an adventurous 3 hour game drive at the Pilanesberg National Park. If lucky, you will spot the entire Big Five.
- Luxuriously elaborate breakfast buffet at The Crystal Court. Enjoy fresh pastries, sushi, tropical fruits, and hot dishes in a beautiful setting.
- Head to Sun City’s iconic Valley of Waves of the Roaring Lagoon, where the kids can float on the lazy river or slide down the thrilling Temple of Courage.
- Take the family to explore the Maze of the Lost City at one of the largest permanent mazes in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Enjoy a Light Lunch at The Palace pool deck which opens daily at midday.
- Enjoy a 90-minute Spa Treatment at the Royal Spa with your partner.
- Take a walk to the Kings Tower to see the Sunrise from highest point in Sun City Resort, offering views in every direction.
- Enjoy an intimate dining experience at The Grill Room which is our signature steakhouse offering expertly selected cuisine and complemented by one of the most notable wine lists in the country.

Luxury at Sun City isn’t defined only by indulgence—it’s about intentional experiences that allow guests to rest, reconnect, and recharge. Whether it’s a meditative walk among lush gardens, a revitalising spa ritual, or a starlit dinner in the heart of the bush, The Palace offers moments that linger long after checkout. Under the thoughtful leadership of General Manager Nico Myburgh, The Palace continues to elevate the guest experience—blending grandeur with genuine hospitality and a deep respect for the surrounding landscape.
